Although ice hockey has long been popular in the Kingdom of Altland, especially in the "frozen South" of the country, particulary in Sperança, Lucidia, and the lake region of Verdania, it has never been a formally organized sport here. Until very recently, therefore, the Royal Altlandic Athletic Commission had no plans to enter a national team in international competition. Nonetheless, the cordial overtures of Caboteniasa's Sven-Arne Blomqvist, President of the Vexillium Ice-Hockey Federation, together with the earnest entreaties of our native ice-hockey fans, have convinced us that the time has come for a change of policy in this regard.
         Accordingly, in late August the Commissioner approached the Chancellor for the Common Weal, under whose jurisdiction the RAAC falls, with an inquiry about the possibility of funding an Altlandic national hockey team for the coming season. In a meeting on the afternoon15 September, the Chancellor confirmed that such funding would be made available and indicated that the Commissioner should proceed forthwith to the recruitment and organization of a team.                                                                    

         Pursuant to these instructions, the Commissioner instituted a crash program to bring together a representative team of amateurs to represent the Kingdom of Altland in this year's international ice hockey competition. Luckily, the RAAC has secured the services of the highly qualified Mr. Thor Thorsson, a son of Islandic immigrants, as coach. He selected the members of our team after tryouts held at the nation's only indoor rink, located in Laculia, the capital of the Duchy of Verdania, where the team is headquartered for the time being.
