![]() The Kings of Romandia had exercised suzeranity over the island of Disonda under one title or another since the fourth century of the old era. Eventually they came personally to hold extensive lands on the island, especially in the provinces of Frumenterra and Cavalera. When the Crown of Romandia was united to that of Altland at the turn of the third century of the present era, the Kings of Altland inherited this position of suzeranity and chose to express by assuming the title of Princes of Disonda, giving the island for the first time a form of centralized government, and exercising their authority through a resident Governor General, who has always been a native Disondan. At the present time, this office is borne by His Altlandic Majesty's second cousin, Idlfons, Duke of Costabenita, whose father had held the same office before the Neonesian usurpation.
In the year 299, after the Neonesian movement which had seized power in kingdom as a whole collapsed on the island of Altland proper and the King had returned, the islands of Namuria and Disonda still remained in the hands of the rebels. In the case of Namuria, His Altlandic Majesty and His Great Council, consulting the often and forcefully expressed preferences of the people of that island, whose culture was in any case very different from that of the other provinces of this kingdom, readily granted independence, and the "Imperial Confederation of Namuria" soon made its appearance in the Vex as a sovereign state. On the smaller island of Disonda, however, the people, close in culture and ancestry to the Romandians, took somewhat longer to overthrow their Neonesian oppressors, who played on unrealistic but powerful nationalistic myths and encouraged the population of the island to dream that they could survive as an independent and sovereign state with a Neonesian government. Accordingly, a reorganized Neonesisan regime maintained power and sought international recognition of its legitimacy. When this was not forthcoming, His Grace, the Duke of Costabenita led the old Disondan aristocracy, which had long been loyal to the Altlandic Crown, in returning the island to its rightful allegiance. Feeble resistance did continue in the mountainous western portions of the country for some time afterwards, but by the end of the year 300 the land had essential been pacified and legitimate order restored. To mark this happy outcome, it was decided early in the year 300 that the reconstituted central government, which had been seated in the Cavaleran capital of Cratera, would be relocated to a new, centrally situated Capital city to be called Unitat after the key word of the island's official anthem. By the start of 305, enough of the governental buildings and facilites had been put in place to allow for the transfer to take place, and the executive and legislative branches of the Principality's govenment moved to the new capital. Meanwhile, private enterprise has not been idle, and residential districts aimed at various housing markets have been developing rapidly to meet the increasing demand. Most government employees and the service workers who cater to their needs have been able to find suitable accomodations within reasonable commuting distance of their jobs. The result is that the city of Unitat is already the third largest municipality of Disonda. |
