Afrazurean Press Samples

At the time of the establishment of the Altlandic Protectorate, there remained only one daily newspaper still being published in the country, the Ingallish-language Sedhinou Sentinel aimed rimarily at the expatriate community living in the capital and other major cities. Since most ordinary Afrazurean could not read Ingallish, if they could read at all, the Imperial Government was not much concerned with what was the Sentinal published, and so it enjoyed a kind of de facto freedom of the press. Its solitary position, however, had resulted partially from the vigorous post-publication censorship and prosecution of the country's journalists during the two decades leading up to the collapse of the political order.

Over the past five years, the Altlandic Protectorate's authorities have encouraged the return of a varied and lively press and has established a national broadcasting authority which now transmits radio programs in Ingallish, Phenixian, and all of the major languages spoken by the various ethnic groups of Afrazure. Originally financed by Altlandic grants and loans, the press is now completely dependent on subscription and advertising revenues, while the ABA (Afrazurean Broadcasting Authority), though still partially subsidized by the government, largely relies on a system of receiver licensing fees collected as part of the annual Personal Property Excise Tax.
